  • Experience:
This externship is recommended for a student interested in providing audiological care to children in a school setting. It offers many experiences, including pediatric hearing evaluations and fittings for hearing assistive technology. While we do not dispense personal hearing aids or CIs, we do program and map loaner devices. We work closely with clinical audiologists to keep our students hearing the best they can while at school and beyond. The extern will also have the opportunity to contribute to the IEP process and work with a multidisciplinary team to determine the educational needs of the students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The extern will be exposed to Deaf culture and students who use multiple modes of communication, such as spoken language and American Sign Language (ASL). This externship is an excellent opportunity to expand one’s skills and become a confident Pediatric/Educational Audiologist. It is important to note that incoming externs will be evaluated and provided with experiences to develop appropriate skills based on their interests and preferences.
  • Housing:
The Western PA School for the Deaf offers on-campus apartment housing when school is in session at a rate of $25 per month.
  • Other Experience:
The extern will have opportunities to engage in both school day and evening events. The school offers a residential program that has regular evening events.
