• The University of Vermont Medical Center, Ear, Nose and Throat (UVMMC ENT) department is offering a 10-12 month 4th year audiology externship position for the 2026-2027 academic year.
  The student will work with audiologists, all whom have earned a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) through American Speech-Language- Hearing Association (ASHA), to provide a full array of diagnostic and rehabilitation services including implantable devices and vestibular testing. Students should expect to experience pediatric/adult diagnostic evaluations, vestibular assessments (vHIT, VEMP, VNG) as well as sedated and non-sedated ABR/ASSR electrophysiology testing. UVMMC ENT is a growing, fast paced clinic with 11 ENT surgeons and 1 nurse practitioner. With 3 pediatric otolaryngologists and 1 neuro-otologist, students will gain experience in surgical/medical audiological diagnostic assessment for both the pediatric and adult population. The student will have the opportunity to work with audiologists who see pediatric and adult patients for both surgical and non-surgical implantable devices, as well as the three main cochlear implant manufacturer representatives. Students can expect involvement in multidisciplinary clinics and operating room exposure. Hearing aid experience can be explored at a collaborating facility. UVMMC has been voted the number 1 hospital in the state, and opportunities to join the health network following externship completion is possible. Conveniently located near Burlington International airport, Burlington VT is less than a 2 hour drive to Montreal, Canada and about 3 hours from Boston, MA.

  Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
  • Otoscopy
  • Comprehensive audiologic assessment, including pure-tone air, bone, and speech audiometry, pediatrics and adults
  • Case history skills
  • Tympanometry, immittance, and DPOAEs
  • Appropriate counseling and documentation
  • A willingness to learn and adapt quickly to a fast-paced environment.
