Position Summary:
The audiology externship provides a 12 month clinical experience available to Au.D. students completing their externship before licensure. There is a stipend of $20,000 for the year.
The audiology department at Akron Children’s is made up of 19 audiologists and 1 audiology aide. Akron Children’s is also a precepting site for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students from a local audiology graduate program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of a licensed audiologist:
- Provides comprehensive diagnostic audiological services to children from birth to adult to include VRA, play audiometry, pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, immittance testing, ABR/ASSR, OAE, and amplification evaluations and fittings (hearing aids, cochlear implants, and bone conduction devices) at the main hospital and division satellite locations.
- Provides services in outpatient and inpatient hospital settings, satellite locations, and multidisciplinary settings with emphasis on clinical quality and efficiency of care process.
- Select and perform age-appropriate audiometric procedures to assess hearing thresholds to determine peripheral hearing sensitivity.
- Provides test results, recommendations, and appropriate referrals to parents, referring physicians, and other professionals.
- Performs and provides clinical management for obtaining, verifying, fitting, and dispensing amplification devices.
- Performs and interprets specialized audiological tests (Universal Newborn Hearing Screenings, non-sedated ABRs, sedated ABRs, ABRs in the OR, and auditory processing evaluations.
- Obtains relevant case history. Demonstrate proficiency in navigating the EMR (Epic), documentation, report writing, and billing in the EMR.
- Participates in interdisciplinary clinics.
- Complete an educational project.
- Other duties as required.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree
Must be enrolled in good standing in an accredited Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program.
Completion of three years in a doctoral level audiology program or two years in an accelerated doctoral level audiology program is required prior to start of the externship.
BLS certification within 30 days of employment.
